Important Safety Notice

Disclaimer: Calculation results are for reference only. Do not use as engineering-certified load data. For real lifting & lashing application please refer to official manufacturer test certificate. Always verify WLL markings on the chain, inspect for wear or damage before each use, and follow applicable standards (EN 12195-3, EN 818-2) and local regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum force a lashing chain is designed to support under normal use, as specified by the manufacturer and relevant standards such as EN 12195-3. It is derived from the chain minimum break load divided by the assigned safety factor. Always select a chain whose WLL meets or exceeds the calculated lashing force for your cargo.

  • Break Load (also called Minimum Breaking Load or MBL) is the force at which a chain sample fails under tensile testing. WLL is calculated by dividing the break load by a safety factor. For transport lashing chains, a common safety factor is 2:1 (WLL = 50% of break load), while lifting chains typically use 4:1. Never use a chain beyond its WLL in normal service.

  • For road transport lashing applications, EN 12195-3 specifies a safety factor of 2:1 for chain assemblies, meaning the WLL is half the minimum break load. For overhead lifting, G80 alloy chains use a 4:1 safety factor. Always verify the standard applicable to your region and application, and consult the manufacturer certificate for the exact WLL marked on the chain or assembly.

  • Weight per meter is the theoretical mass of one meter of straight chain, based on the chain diameter, link pitch, and material density. It is useful for estimating total shipment weight, freight cost, and handling requirements. Actual weight may vary slightly due to manufacturing tolerances and end fittings. For assemblies with hooks, shackles, or binders, add the weight of those fittings separately.

  • This calculator provides reference values for transport lashing chains (G43, G70) and general-purpose G80 alloy chain. For overhead lifting, sling assemblies, or any life-safety application, you must use lifting-certified components with valid test certificates and follow the applicable lifting regulations (e.g., EN 818-2 for G80 short-link chain). Do not use transport lashing chain for lifting.
